New Fics I want to check out:

Right by BertaS
R, 1,164
Summary: Harry finds Severus after the war. Post-DH.
http://indecentfantasy.livejournal.com/9277.html

The Dumbledore Stratagem by Sarkysue
NC-17, 17,000
Summary: A story in which Draco is pretty much a sociopath, Snape is verging on the Heathcliffian and Harry is, well, Harry. Stuck in a hideaway with his two least favourite Slytherins, Harry starts competing for something he didn’t even realise that he wanted. An alternative to DH, kind of.
Notes: I am sold by the summary. Sociopath!Draco? Heathcliffian!Snape? And post-HBP AU? Yes please!!

Behind these fortress walls by curia_regis
NC-17, 8,000
Summary: The invention of a male pregnancy potion allows the wizarding world to rebuild after the devastating war.
Warnings: Non-con, slave!fic, mpreg
Notes: Hm, the warnings would have kept me away, but this was rec'd by the Snarry Reader, so I guess I shall give it a try.
http://curia-regis.livejournal.com/836514.html

In Loco Parentis by Dolores Crane
Explicit, 81,072
Summary: 'It's not just Death Eaters that kill Muds. After the Second World War, the Muggle civil rights movements got started. Black rights, and feminism, and gay rights. We -- wizards -- we never had the sixties, because we just kept replaying the war, over and over again: Grindelwald in the forties, then Voldemort in the seventies, then Voldemort again in the nineties. I just hope this time it's really finished, and we can sort out our own fucking house.' Hermione is back at school after a summer in the Muggle world, and everything is changing. But getting closer to Harry doesn't get her any closer to the war - until she's unexpectedly enrolled in the Order of the Phoenix, and meets Hestia Jones, the founder of Mud Pride.
Notes: I LOVE AUs, and this one is a post-OotP AU. The summary promises lots of meaty plot and lovely characterizations! From an author I've read and trust - awesome.

The Riddle of Severus Snape by eeyore9990

1:21 pm - Odysseus's Last Days by Amand-r
http://amand-r.livejournal.com/250234.html#cutid1

PG-14, post-DH, EWE
WARNINGS: Character death, suicidal themes, much much angst!

Summary: "He certainly hadn't predicted that the happy ending he'd dug out of the dirt, the blackness of his own self, the one he'd compromised so much for, would have dissipated with something as harmless as a plunge from a low bridge. Because it's not the fall that would have killed him. It would have been the sudden stop, or the rushing water, or a sharp stone to the skull, things that any wizard worth his salt could have got out of, if he'd wanted to."

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
This fic is not the sharp, painful angst usually associated with Snarry and especially with character death. No, this angst is a low burn in the chest, a churning ache in the gut, bittersweet (more bitter than sweet). It is exquisite. It is funny. It is traumatic and beautiful and funny all at once - everything I've ever wished for in a Snarry death!fic and everything I've never wanted for my OTP.

The truly dazzling aspect of this fic is the writing style. I loved the flashback/present structure of the story, and love even more the way she cleverly disguises the identity of the dead character (is it Snape? Wait, no it's Harry! Wait...which is it? No it can't be him! I certainly guessed wrong the first time around!). The tone of the story is whimsical and understated, but so much fun to read! Amard-r has this incredible ability to manipulate language, and through it  manipulate the emotions of the reader. Reading her writing is having my breath caught painfully in my throat  at the end of one paragraph, only to be expelled in a chortle at the beginning of the next.

7:45 pm - Open love letter to Telanu and the Tea Series
First off, I'd like to say that I realize that any sort of review or rec of the Tea Series is utterly redundant. However, my love for it is at such a crest right now, and considering how I never properly reviewed it 7 years ago when I first read it...here I go!

I have just reread the entire series in 4 breathless days and sleepless nights (and considering the 790,000+ words, that is no small feat!), and feel like I have fallen in love, all over again. You know that first honeymoon period of infatuation, excitement, delight when you first fall in love? Telanu has brought me back to that heady feeling from when I first fell for Snarry. And no wonder, that this is one of the 2 fics that seduced me into the pairing way back when, in my innocent days of first discovering slash. After so many years of reading fanfiction, I think I have grown somewhat complacent about the quality of fic I read. Not that I’m saying the standard of Snarry fanfic has lowered (I still firmly believe Snarry has THE highest caliber writing in all of HP fandom), just that I’ve forgotten just how high the standard of Truly masterpieces of Snarry COULD be. And now I’ve remembered.

And it is plot, plot, PLOT. People, plot is what has and always will be the crux upon which a good fiction story hangs. It is what drew us into the HP universe in the first place, thanks to JK Rowling’s talent with plot-twists and world-building and those lovely, lovely little details about daily wizard life, about routines at Hogwarts, about Dumbledore’s endearing little quirks. While it is true that Snarry is first and foremost about…well, the relationship between Snape and Harry, great world-building and plot development make a romance into a Romance!Thriller!Comedy!Mystery! Which is so much better! Especially such a long, carefully developed story as Telanus, which allows us to truly understand the complicities of a burgeoning Snarry relationship, as well as experience all the wonderful aspects we love about HP canon (think FrednGeorge antics! RonnHermione flirting! Malfoy stalking! Studying and going to class and spending the summer with Sirius and much, much more!) The Tea series will forever become my canon. Since the whole thing was written alongside the successive release of the last 3 canon books, the author has incorporated little parallels with canon in her stories, which are a delight to spot.

But like I said earlier, Snarriness is the quintessential test of a Snarry fic, and boy! Can Telanu do Snarry! I love her Snape, who is snarky and brilliant and not pretty but ohsosexy! And so, so passionate. The fic switches between Snape and Harry POV, and I loved the revelations that result from being able to go into Snape’s head occasionally and discover the intensity of his feelings about Harry, without Snape everEVER getting soppy or slightly out of character. He is delightfully flawed in a hundred petty, bitter, immature ways, though not to the harsh extent Atrata writes her Snape. Telanu’s Snape is teeth-clenchingly jealous and possessive, barely-in-control when it comes to Harry, and so awesome it makes my heart hurt. I love it when Snape gets jealous, or when he is a jackass to Harry, or when he insults people, or when he scowls or fucks or walks or breathes...um. Harry is also wonderful, and didn’t make me want to strangle him once! And all the supporting characters (Ron, Hermione, the Weasley twins, McGonagall, Fleur, Dumbledore…) are all SO well characterized and brought to life, with their own agendas and voices and quirks…and the side pairings! Oh.my.god. Heartstopping, shocking, and forever converted me to two pairings I would never have given a chance otherwise. The only character that I had a problem with was Neville...I still don't know what I feel about his side story.

Telanu is a true master of storytelling to a level where I find her writings more well-structured, well-crafted, and well-imagined than many published books. She is so good with character voice and point-of-view, managing to review and conceal strategic bits of information, to show rather than tell, to convey emotion without writing it down in so many words…I am simply in awe. Her writing is so good it has inspired me to voluntarily (and in spite of myself) write an entire essay about her writing. It is ingenious. There are not enough words to praise the Tea Series, after which all fics will pale in comparison for quite a while. Humble readers like myself are always immensely grateful to any author willing and able to write such an epic novel-length Snarry, because it is these stories that draw us in the deepest, seducing us until we are so heavily emotionally invested in the characters and their relationships, that it will indelibly stay with us for the rest of our lives. And I exaggerate not. I know I am not the first nor the last to have been converted to Snarry after reading Telanu, and have never looked back. My only regret is that the author herself no longer writes Snarry.

So! With that said...

8:34 pm - A Tower of Transparency by Sinope
Title: A Tower of Transparency
Author: Sinope (eponis on lj)
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Snape/Harry, Harry/Neville
Summary: A chance encounter with a figure from Harry's past leads to present temptation.

WORTH CHECKING OUT: I wanted to shake and throttle Harry, for being so stupid. I want him to do the obvious (so, so painfully obvious!), because the situation he is in is not happy for anyone involved! And Harry should always be with Severus, he is wrong in every other pairing. Snape here is beguiling and so cool, even though he is only in a handful of scenes. Ambiguous ending, but I know what will happen.

8:07 pm - Yearning by Mandy
Title: Yearning
Author: Mandy (aka [info]geneticallydead)

Rated NC-17, Post-DH, non-Epilogue compliant
4 chapters, medium length

Summary: Harry buries Snape at Godric's Hollow. As he was in life, so he would be in death. Alone. But not forgotten.

RECOMMENDED: By the author that brought us "Mobius," a Snape-is-alive! DH-redemptive fic for those in denial of what happened in cannon. Wonderful and funny, with IC Harry voice and GREAT sardonic Snape voice. Made me giggle more than a few times. A happy ending :)

11:26 am - Reconciling Lily's Eyes by Persepolis130
Reconciling Lily's Eyes by Persepolis130
NC-17, ~52,175 words (11 chapters)
Summary: Had Harry known "bonding" with his former professor would lead him to three different countries, a hastily-planned wedding and his pants around his ankles in Snape's sitting room, he wouldn't have quit his day job. Or…maybe he would've… What it's like to fall in love with someone you absolutely cannot stand, who happens to still be in love with your mum. Post-DH.

RECOMMENDED
: Another Harry-goes-to-find-Snape-after-finding-out-he's-not-dead, this time to save him out of guilt. Snape goes to America to teach, then on to Beauxbatons. Ugly!Snape, awkward!sex, hiliarious "dry, deadpan, absurdist humor," and morally ambiguous and emotionally ambivalent Snape!! My favorite type of Snape characterization :)

Here is [info]perverse_idyll's crack_broom rec: http://community.livejournal.com/crack_broom/1026562.html

And the Sequel, Eqilogue for Lily's Eyes by Persepolis130 (yes, I know, brilliant title lol)
NC-17, 10479 words
Summary: The best part of falling in love with a man who's in love with your mum's eyes is never having to take off your glasses. Chronicles the first (mildly insane) sixteen-odd years of Snape and Harry's life together.
Warning: mpreg

WORTH CHECKING OUT: Snape just gets more ridiculous, lol. But all in good fun!

10:55 am - If You Are Prepared by Cybele
Ugh. I felt especially masochistic last night, I think, because I did something I was planning on never doing again (for fear of repeated traumatization). Yes, I reread the last two chapters of IYAP. If I had become complacent about Snarry or had been lured by new favorites, last night quickly reminded me of just why IYAP was and is and always will be my Number One. The Snape voice, god I have yet to read a Snape POV to compare to Cybele's. So IC (more IC than canon!), so snarky, so intelligent and witty and...vulnerable. It really makes the fic, I think. And, of course the ending. God, I went into this fic completely unsuspecting and happy and naive and trusting and...and...well.

There is really nothing else to say about this fic that hadn't been said a thousand times before and a million times more eloquently. It really is the fic that made Drarry, LOTR RPS, Jack/Will, and every single other ship I had been playing around in PALE in comparison to Snarry, the OTP. I never would have bought Snarry based on anyone else's words. I have never believed in any literary pairing like I do SS and HP.

The link to IYAP: http://www.swish-n-flick.netfirms.com/images/coverpages/iyap_cover.htm

NC-17, LONG novella
Summary: A task he can’t refuse. A boy he doesn’t want to refuse.
WARNING: underage, major character death

1:20 am - Crucius by Dolores Crane
http://www.walkingtheplank.org/archive/viewstory.php?sid=74

NC-17, pre-OotP
Type: Angst, Romance, First Time
Summary: "Harry hates being a schoolboy and Snape hates being a teacher; what else do they have in common, and how can they escape?" Snape teaches Harry Defense against the Dark Arts, against Voldemort. WARNING: some may consider it chan, as Harry is 15-16 in the fic.

RECOMMENDED: Stylistically, this piece was phenomenal. The writing evokes a dreamy, nostalgic quality. At first, I ached for the chapters to be expanded, for Harry and Snape's interactions to be more detailed and drawn-out, for them to interact more, period. But then, I realized that the fic really couldn't have been anything more without detracting from the beauty of its writing. Still, I was left wanting more, more. Aside from the quality of the writing, the characterizations were good, too. Snape was more needy, but still in character. The plot, however, was too ambiguous IMO. Interesting DADA theories, but the whole "eating death" thing had me confused, and I wasn't sure what happened in the end. I may have to reread the fic at some point and see if it makes any more sense. All in all, a well-written, fairly quick-read.

3:39 am - If This Be Error by Nimori
Rated NC-17 (barely, IMO)
Genres: First Time, Humour
Word count: 12784
Summary: Harry has a simple spell to guarantee Snape's loyalty. Naturally, he makes a mess of it. Written for the Snarry Games 2007 Team Wartime.

Highly Recommended: This fic was fucking hilarious, I was cracking up through most of it. Features unglamorous!sex, but still hot chemistry. This Snape and Harry are both so lovable and just awwww.

10:55 pm - Everybody's Fool by Cluegirl
Everybody's Fool: http://www.thequidditchpitch.org/viewstory.php?sid=2298&index=1

Rated NC-17
Wordcount: 106776 (16 chapters)
Summary: Harry Potter: Bruised veteran of too many heartbreaks; cynical, jaded drunkard; Wardwright, war hero, recluse, and part time matchmaker. Next target -- Severus Snape, who has a lot to learn about love. Post-war, past HP/DM and HP/RW

WORTH CHECKING OUT: Long, satisfying read with lots of cool magical theory details and character relationship dynamics. I didn't particularly like Harry's dramatics, but Snape's character was well done. The writing was also polished.

2:04 pm - Fields Before Each Other by Aqua Alta
Title: Fields Before Each Other
Author: [info]aqua_alta (aka Becca Snape)

Snarry Games 2007, Team Wartime, Angst & Romance, Scorched Earth
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: 7,420
Summary: Two years after the events of Half Blood Prince, after two years of war, of set-backs and successes, Harry, Snape and the rest of the Order of the Phoenix are working on planning their final thrust against Voldemort and the Death Eaters. They come to realise that, in times of war, victory exacts a terrible price.

Recommended: Beautiful, tense, tragic angst. Short, but exquisite!

10:31 pm - Commonplace Magic by Acid and Sinick
Rated R, 19,448 words
Summary: "No doom of the wizarding world hanging in the balance, no tragic premature deaths. Just Harry getting inside a solitary man's defences, by not really trying." A non-magic AU inspired by the Price of Magic fic (it's not necessary to have read PoM, though both are definitely worth reading!). Harry works at the Cheshire Cheese and goes to uni, and in his spare time gets to know Snape.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: I read this as soon as I finished PoM, and CM turned out to be even better than its longer counterpart (if that's even possible!). Excellent Harry and Snape characterizations, as usual, and a believable, charming falling-in-love story reminiscent of Anya-elizabeth's "An Awkward Customer." Their dynamics had me melting and sighing all over the place. Fluff with a fair dose of angst, just lovely!! The new year scene was the BEST!!!

11:48 pm - The Price of Magic by Acid and Sinick
R (only a few place, mostly PG-13); 12 chapters (novella length)
Warnings: character death, although not really. You'll have to read the fic to know what I mean. Also, past (though still relevant in story) Lucius/Severus
Summary: "Haunted by the ghost of a former student, an ex-wizard struggles to preserve magical knowledge for future generations." Post-war AU. Magic disappears after Harry's defeat of Voldemort, and the entire wizarding world suffers the terrible consequences. Harry and a reluctant Snape struggle to restore magic. Oh yeah, did I mention? Snape has a ghost problem and a drinking problem. He struggles to not become too attached to spirits.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: Angst galore! But not in a cry-your-eyes-out-everybody-dies sort of way. Well, not EVERYBODY dies... This fic was long and emotionally satisfying, and oh so original! The writing and style is of the highest caliber, and characterization (Snape AND Harry) is beyond lovely! The progression of their relationship drew me in thoroughly, until I became so completely invested in them that I pretty much read the entire fic with my heart in my throat, dreading and yet hopeful of the ending. But it's not all angst and emotions! Snape is still snarky and funny and Harry somewhat ridiculous, and the sexual tension here is its own brand of delayed gratification. Also, I never realized that place characterizations could add so much to a reading experience until I read the London and Hogwarts described in this story. Read this for an experience reminiscent of IYAP (but um, less traumatizing...).

8:02 pm - Absolution by Your cruise director
NC-17, 7 chapters (medium length)
Summary: "Harry asks Snape to help him deal with the aftermath of killing Voldemort."
Warnings: BDSM, spanking, dark magic.

Recommended: Sexy sex scenes and a falling-for-each-other story. What's not to like?

4:08 pm - Clipped Wings by Theresa Ann Wymer
R (barely), hurt/comfort, post-war AU, submissive!Snape

Summary: “After catastrophe, Harry deals with survivor’s guilt and finds hope for himself and others.” Set in a dystopic future, in which magic is persecuted and wizards hunted, stripped of their magic, and sold into slavery. Harry buys Snape, and they help each other find freedom.

WORTH CHECKING OUT
: I love dystopian premises, and this fic certainly started out with a chilling layout of a dystopian society. The Snape portrayed here is a broken, subdued Snape, and Harry a helpless, hopeless Harry. Their progressive relationship is a beautiful study in hurt/comfort and and quiet desperation. However, it is lacking in the heat and passion I look for in the Snarry relationship. The culmination of their relationship sort of snuck up on me, as did the ending. I felt that the author could have done more with the plot and characterization. Nonetheless, it is worth checking out, as it is not a long read. It also features a very likable Dudley.

1:06 am - Twelve Days by venivincere
Twelve Days, by [info]venivincere
Romance, NC-17, 12 chapters and 48412 words
Summary: "Nothing says 'I love you' like a brand new loo." Snape owns an apothecary in a post-war world, and Harry rents a room above the shop while deciding what to do with himself. Meanwhile, dragon pox is running rampant throughout the wizarding world, threatening adult men with sterility if infected. Luckily for Harry and for Snape, sterility is an irrelevant issue for them either way...

RECOMMENDED: Sweet and fluffy, but not in a gag-worthy way! Snape’s characterization, while still occasionally bitter and frequently droll, is more mellow than cannon; he is refreshingly generous with emotions (relatively, for Snape anyway!), affording us glimpses of vulnerability that make him decidedly endearing. And of course, funny and sexy, always sexy! A bit of jealousy and angst, but this fic doesn’t so much focus on the volatile dynamics of Snarry so much as explores the understanding between them. More than anything, this is a love story unfolding over dinner conversations, shop inventories, and contagious magical diseases. I loved the dragon pox scenes! Dialogue is snappy and entertaining, and there is a wonderful drunk-and-insultingly-bitter Snape scene that will make you giggle out loud!

And now for the art:

Recommended art )

Hmm, tallying up my recs, I seem to be 17:18 in Team Snitch's favor. So their win is very much deserved! However, my top favorite fics and art are almost all Cauldron, and I figure that should count for double points so...I am retrospectively more in support of Team Cauldron. Although both are apparently awesomely amazing for all their contributions. I am so sad that there will be no more Snarry Games :(

12:05 am - Snarry Games 2009 Fic recs
I have finally read every single fic in the latest (and last T_T) round of the [info]snarry_games . I have to say, given that most of the genres and this round aren't ones I usually read and some I even avoid (like cross-dressing/gender-bender, crossover/fusion, severitus), I am very pleasantly surprised by the amount of enjoyable fics and FANTASTIC art I encountered. It was fun trying new genres and venturing where I've never ventured before. Although, I still don't think I'll ever become a fan of severitus or gender-bending...

Now I shall now proceed to rec my favorites. In order of preference:
